The Choice of Ms. Kiran Bedi
There were indications for sometime now that Ms Kiran Bedi would be joining the BJP as she was tweeting highly of the change that had taken place in the Central Government and particularly she had been praising the leadership of PM Modi. She has finally joined the BJP and the PM-Shah combine has rightly projected her to lead the elections in Delhi.
After the General Elections of 2014, various elections to States took place and the BJP had been doing better in these by winning in some and becoming the lead party in others and thus forming the government on its own or with the allies. Though stated in simple terms as above, these would not have been possible but for the good work done by the erstwhile BJP CMs in their states that there was no anti-incumbency factor as well as well-laid out strategies for each State by the formidable combination of PM Modi and Party chief Amit Shah. It is only natural that the Party wants its image for better governance to be maintained in other States too, that would be going for polls. The days of Jan Sangh with an absolute cadre-based have gone and in the new dispensations several adjustments have to be done by the Party according to the changing times with the development angle given more credence than other things. Thus discipline in the party also is not the same presently as was in the days of Jan Sangh. A lot more has to be done in this area by BJP in bringing in faces of absolute integrity and persons who care for values and showing those who are not, that they would be sidelined. It is by all means, a welcome change.
The specific case of Delhi when seen in detail, these factors have a definite bearing in the induction of newcomers. The days of UPA with Ms. Sheila Dixit saw of corruption charges leveled against them in CWG and also in misuse of public funds to the tune of Rs.22.56 Cr in an Advt campaign ahead of 2008 assembly polls. The people who were vehement apart from BJP to accuse the Sheila Dixit government took the support of Congress to be in power without properly explaining the changed circumstances which warranted that support and which they should have taken directly instead of feigning as if Congress support or not they can be in power. Herein started the lies and U turns of a government which if it had asked for the support of Congress openly and also taken in action based on charges to be framed as called for by the Courts, AAP and Shri Kejriwal would have maintained their image of the days of India Against Corruption. Instead, Shri Kejriwal wasted the support which he got from India Against Corruption followers of Delhi, which he usurped from Anna Hazare who went for Jail in his fight against corruption in Delhi. Shri Kejriwal did not court arrest at that time and after becoming Chief Minister did not acknowledge that the good work done along with Anna Hazare paved the way for his Ministry and avoided stating - though unwilling got the support of Congress to bring in governance the people would have loved. The Janlokpal bill finally brought down his ministry because no action had been taken to have a dialogue with all interested parties on that score and also due to the inexperience in governance.
The actions he had taken further in various state elections that followed only could see that he could not keep his party intact and thanks to the sagacity of Shri Yogendra Yadav, the rumblings within did not come out into the open during Haryana elections. But many leaders got disappointed the way in which the party was being run and could be seen from some the leaders who were staunch supporters of Shri Kejriwal during the days of IAC. The people were no longer viewing the party of the initial days, as it had come out a long way both in terms of cohesiveness and its functioning. The Opposition leader Shri Harshvardhan had definitely done a good work during the rule of AAP in Delhi and the shortlived ministry did not give him ample opportunities. But for him others in BJP were vying for individual recognition than importance as a leader of a party that should govern with a difference.
The BJP Party helm have been very patiently watching the Delhi situation and as in all other states, had their strategy in place for Delhi elections and after and thus, the entry of Ms. Kiran Bedi into BJP is no surprise. She would be bringing the all important Change that is required in the approach to the elections and the electorate of Delhi which are disappointed with successive governments need an alternative. The Choice of Ms. Kiran Bedi by BJP will give them the alternative. She is known always to pursue boldly what she believes to be good for the society. For her part, Ms. Bedi has done well in clearly bringing out the necessity of women safety and there are many other factors the Delhi electorate would want like solving the problems of availability of water, a clean Yamuna river, law and order on all occasions maintained to the satisfaction besides the semblance of governance seen to be believed.
Now it is for the Delhi Electorate and Ms. Bedi to bring the all important change.
