Shyam invited Gopu for an evening meeting over a cup of coffee and also reminded, it is long since they met. That evening, Gopu straight came to the subject of Uniform Civil Code and how it requires to be implemented for retaining the age old traditions and culture of India. He said all sections of the society, without exception, should fall in line when it comes to education, minimum marriageable age, divorce, alimony, inheritance from ancestors etc., and thus pave the way for equality among all citizens. General broad guidelines shall be drawn first and these enacted as law with the solidarity shown by lawmakers in the case of GST Bill.
Mere utterances of discrimination, now and then, to suit political necessities won't do, added Gopu.
Shyam too agreed with him, but told, it is easier said than done. Even a small matter of a midday meal at Ujjain is a pointer, he said to Gopu. Just because the food has been offered to Hindu Gods, Muslim children were not in favour of that meal. No religious leaders or the media which used to shout from rooftops have come out on the issue, to say, the least one is expected is to show 'tolerance' and cite examples of the eagerness and happiness with which all the leaders of every party participating in Ramzan party. Pity is even these are silent and have failed to tell people concerned that the issue of tolerance is uniform for everybody. With media, religious leaders of the community prefer to highlight issues only to paint majority in bad colour, they are really doing a disservice to the whole citizens of the country. Whether the media is at the hand of vested interests and why should they take amiss, when pointed.
Thus, for UCC have to be a reality, political will is necessary and leaders of all parties should unite to bring in a legislation. Shyam and Gopu wondered whether such a situation will be in the near future and while parting, agreed to meet again.

UCC even if brought with political will, has to withstand Supreme Court nod too. Some one will go to SC.
ReplyDeleteReservation in TN and some other States is UPTO 69%. Still, 10% reservation over & above 50% reservation brought by Gujarat for Economically Weaker OCs, was struck down.
So UCC is a good dream. As Kalam Sir told, first let's dream and then achieve it.
